Happy Halloween Week! Bonus Backer Missions Galore! And Prepare for the Final 48 Hours!
over 8 years ago – Thu, Oct 29, 2015 at 12:00:21 AM

Happy Halloweek, MechWarriors! We’ve been getting in the Halloween spirit here at HBS, complete with BATTLETECH pumpkins!

Yes, you’re seeing that right - Zach (who’s studying to be a cat-lady) carved a Cat-tleTech pumpkin.
Yes, you’re seeing that right - Zach (who’s studying to be a cat-lady) carved a Cat-tleTech pumpkin.

The Global BattleTech Community has been knocking those Backer Missions out of the park, but as we head into our Kickstarter’s Final Week (wow, already?) we want to provide some double-secret bonus opportunities to get enough points to unburden our fearless leaders of their beards.

So, this week, we have three, count them, THREE, Bonus Backer Missions for you!

As Jordan will tell you in this video, the FIRST Bonus Backer Mission is to show us your BATTLETECH pumpkins and costumes!

Take a look:

A generous Backer by the name of Matt Bussey made some BATTLETECH stencils to share with you. You can download them by clicking here. Thanks Matt!

As Jordan mentions in the video, his lovely wife Dawne dressed up as the Black Widow herself, Natasha Kerensky, for GenCon 1988! Here’s a blurry, but awesome picture of them together in costume.

Dawne is the one on the left.

We can’t wait to see your BattleTech pumpkins and costumes! Tweet them to us using the hashtags #myBThalloween and #BATTLETECH.

Which ‘Mech Are You?

Everyone loves a personality quiz, so this week’s SECOND Bonus Backer Mission is to take our “Which ‘Mech Are You?” quiz and post the results on Facebook and Twitter! Are you a small, but quick Commando? An Atlas, dominant and powerful? Take the quiz to find out!

Click the image to take the quiz!

Share it and see which of your friends you could take down in a BattleMech brawl!

Thunderclap!

Our THIRD Bonus Backer Mission this week is to join our Thunderclap and help get the word out about the final hours of our BATTLETECH Kickstarter campaign.

Thunderclap is a new tool that helps get a specific message out on Facebook and Twitter on the same day and at the same time to create an online flashmob.

Just click HERE and choose “Support with Twitter” and/or “Support with Facebook”. By doing so, you’ll add your social media voice to our Thunderclap. Oh, and feel free to share the link with your friends, too!

On Monday, November 2nd, everyone who has signed up will automatically make a one-time social media post telling your friends and followers that we are in the Final Hours of the BATTLETECH Kickstarter. Help make our Thunderclap as loud as possible to spread the word far and wide.

Monday’s Alcohol-Fueled Live Stream Clarification!

We’re so busy with pre-production and running our Kickstarter that we didn’t realize American daylight savings time kicks in on Sunday. So here’s a revised invitation so everyone arrives at the party at the right time.

We’re just about to hit the Legendary Mechs and MechWarriors Funding Goal with almost a week still to go! That means there’s still time to hit Stage 4 - PVP Multiplayer if we get the word out.

Alcohol-Fueled Live Stream Unlocked! And a Peek Behind the Curtain at The Sartorial Designer!
over 8 years ago – Mon, Oct 26, 2015 at 11:46:36 PM

The BATTLETECH Kickstarter campaign had a strong weekend. We added over 500 new Backers bringing our total number above thirty thousand! And so far, we have over 500 folks talking about their favorite ‘Mech using #favBTmech!

And that means our studio’s collective nightmare has come true. The Global BattleTech Community has unlocked an Alcohol-Fueled Live Stream Twitch Session with Jordan Weisman, Mike McCain, and Mitch Gitelman to kick off the final 24 hours of the campaign.

Uh oh.
Uh oh.

Now don’t just show up with #BATTLETECH questions for this one. You can ask “da boys” anything from how games are made, to their best game convention experience, to how the studio really works…

Tell your friends! Make it a date! Drink along!

We are now thisclose to $2,150,000 and unlocking Legendary 'Mech & MechWarriors in the Stage 3 Extended Mercenary Campaign! Um... tell your friends about that, too!

Go, go, go!

And now, a Peek Behind the Curtain at the Best Dressed (Male) Developer at HBS...

He wears two-toned shoes, too.

My name is Tyler Carpenter, and I’m both a writer and a designer on BATTLETECH.

I’ve been with Harebrained Schemes since January 2015, working as a content designer for Shadowrun: Hong Kong, designing and writing many of the runs in Act 2, such as Whistleblower and Misdirection. I’ve been playing BattleTech since 1990, when I picked up the 2nd edition boxed set, rather than the AD&D books all my friends were buying.

I’ll be working on the story (with the rest of the former Shadowrun writing team), and larger overarching metagame - hiring MechWarriors, ‘Mech customization, negotiating transportation costs, and that sort of thing. My other, unofficial title is the human-shaped walking encyclopedia of BattleTech lore, so I’m also somewhat responsible for reminding the other designers when particular ‘Mechs entered production, who has a blood feud against whom, and the state of various Periphery states in the 3025 era. My job will be to tie the tactical combat part of our game together with the larger mercenary management game, and help ensure that everything you do looks and feels true to the BattleTech universe.

After 25 years of playing BattleTech, it feels like I’ve been waiting my whole life to bring this game to life on the PC, so I’m not only really looking forward to making a game with a compelling, interesting story, but one where the player is free to command their own destiny, taking jobs from their favorite Great Houses and feuding with their enemies. And, of course, players should be able to spend long hours tinkering in the ‘Mech Lab until they’ve tweaked their Marauder or Shadow Hawk to perfection.

Customizable Home Base Unlocked! It Might Be Humble - But It's Home! And… Another Backer Mission Reward Unlocked!
over 8 years ago – Sat, Oct 24, 2015 at 12:28:51 AM

Well, that was fast! Thanks to your generous support (and our new INITIATE OF THE ORDER reward level), we’ve unlocked the Customizable Home Base funding goal. HUZZAH!

It Might Be Humble - But It's Home

The Order of Valhalla rallied our forces to make a Customizable Home Base a reality. As we discussed before, our current idea is that you're refitting a derelict ship one module at a time, expanding its functionality based on the needs of your mercenary outfit as you go. (We know many of you are interested to know what sort of ship to expect and we are exploring the possibilities. That will be a topic for a future Kickstarter update some time during production.)

Just like construction in the real world, refitting will take money, time, and judgment as you figure out how you want to allocate the space available for the modules you want to add.

We are just starting to work out the different types of modules, but here are some that we think will be available:

  • ’Mech Bays are the heart and soul of your operation. We see having two types of 'Mech Bays - repair bays and refit bays. One Repair Bay is required for each ‘Mech in your outfit’s inventory where your MechTechs can perform repairs to the internal structure, components, weapons, and armor of the resident ‘Mech. Refit Bays are required for the much more intensive work needed to change a 'Mech’s weapon systems and/or internal components.
  • Space can be dedicated to 'Mech Simulators instead of housing more real 'Mechs or vehicles. During travel, and/or instead of being deployed to the battlefield, MechWarriors can be assigned to the training bay in order to improve specific skills.
  • Adding a MechTech Fabrication Bay will increase your technical teams’ ability to jury-rig, repair, and even improve your 'Mechs.
  • A Sick Bay will treat MechWarriors’ minor wounds, but a Ship’s Hospital will be required to stitch a seriously wounded MechWarrior back together and then convalesce enough to return to battle ready condition.
  • Among others!

We want the design and construction of your home base to be fun, to provide interesting choices, and ultimately to provide long-term benefits to your mercenary outfit.

The next target of opportunity on our march to Stage 4: PVP Multiplayer is…

  • $2,150,000 - Legendary 'Mech & MechWarriors: In addition to the game's standard 'Mechs and customizable, procedurally-generated MechWarriors, we'll include rare legendary 'Mechs to find, and rare hero MechWarriors to hire - including some famous characters from BattleTech history. Such legends may not stick around for long, but will be well worth hiring if you can afford them.

Backer Mission Reward Unlocked

The Global BattleTech Community roars on! We just hit 400 #favBTmech tweets and 6.5k Likes of our Facebook Announcement:

https://www.facebook.com/HarebrainedSchemes/posts/890152257719609:0

Through your combined efforts, 38 points have been earned, unlocking a cameo in-game appearance for Morgan Kell of the Kell Hounds in the story campaign!

Congratulations, MechWarriors!

That puts us in striking range of an Alcohol-Fueled Live Streaming Twitch Q&A with Jordan, Mike, and Mitch. No other Mission Reward has caused more fear from Harebrained Schemes than this one. Two gray beards and a young buck sucking down booze while answering your questions? What could possibly go wrong? It’s not like any of these guys are loose cannons…

Keep your #favBTmech tweets coming! Here are the social media links to help us get to the drunk livestream and beyond:

Marauders and Warhammers and Reward Levels, OH MY!
over 8 years ago – Fri, Oct 23, 2015 at 08:09:17 PM

Hey Everyone!

We’re ridiculously excited to announce that thanks to our friends at Piranha Games, we’re adding two reimagined classic BattleMechs from the original boardgame to our BATTLETECH game - the Marauder and the Warhammer!

Here’s some quick reference about these two heavy ‘Mechs from our (other) friends at Catalyst Game Labs’ Master Unit List.

http://www.masterunitlist.info/Unit/Details/3482/warhammer-whm-11t

http://www.masterunitlist.info/Unit/Details/2053/marauder-ii-bounty-hunter

The Master Unit List is an online tool for players to sort through the myriad units that populate the BattleTech universe. For example, the links above showcase one of several versions of the Warhammer and Marauder. Have fun exploring the MUL to find the unit you're looking for.

New Digital Reward Level!

We’re also excited to tell you about our new $85 Digital Reward Level - INITIATE OF THE ORDER.

Which order? The Order of Valhalla!

Valhalla, the paradise promised to Vikings who die in combat, is also the name of the most elite establishment on Solaris VII whose doors are only open to those who have distinguished themselves above all others. While Terra may be the geographic center of the Inner Sphere many would argue that Valhalla is actually the social, entertainment, and even political center of the Inner Sphere.

Valhalla’s hallowed halls are populated with the champions of all of Solaris’ gladiatorial arenas, the Ambassadors and military elite of every Great House, the leaders of the most prominent and/or notorious Mercenary Outfits, the rich descendants of the most noble ancient families, and of course hidden among them – the very best espionage agents the Great Houses can field. But it is only the descendants of those that founded Valhalla who are members of the elite Order of Valhalla.

At Valhalla’s tables, made of ancient wood of Terra, the Order of Valhalla members put aside politics and gladiatorial posturing around them to enjoy the company of those few who can really understand a warrior’s life and the meaning of their eventual deaths. The walls of Valhalla are a constant reminder that death is certain but that immortality is possible, for on the walls hang the sections of each fallen warrior’s cockpit displaying their name and heraldry. Each member of the Order of Valhalla knows that should they encounter each other across an arena or a battlefield no quarter will be given, but should one of them fall in battle they know each will do the other the honor of retrieving their “shield” for display on the walls of Valhalla.

As an INITIATE OF THE ORDER, Backers at this Digital $85 Reward Level will get:

1) Access to the private VALHALLA sub-forum of the upcoming BATTLETECH community site. Only Initiates of the Order and Solaris VII Champions will have access to Valhalla.

2) A small ORDER OF VALHALLA ICON will display next to your avatar or username in BATTLETECH forums (and in multiplayer if funded), identifying you as an Initiate of the Order.

3) A SET OF Order of Valhalla DECORATIVE ITEMS for your DROPSHIP’S COMMANDER’S QUARTERS. You’ll get special options such as artwork, banners, and letters of marque to add to your room.

4) A special BADGE OF THE ORDER that you can incorporate into your Mercenary outfit’s emblem, which will appear as your Mercenary identifier in the game, on your 'Mechs, and in social locations such as forums and leaderboards (if the multiplayer Funding Stage 4 is achieved.)

5) A UNIQUE ORDER OF VALHALLA PAINT SCHEME available for 8 'Mech chassis of historical significance to the Order. These exclusive paint schemes will appear on the Locust, Shadow Hawk, Thunderbolt, Warhammer, Marauder, and BattleMaster and two more classic BattleMechs we’ll announce at a later date!

If you’ve already Backed the project at a lower level and wish to upgrade your Reward Level, click "Manage Your Pledge" in the upper right corner of the Kickstarter page (the blue button) and then click the $85 Reward Selection button.

This Week’s Bonus Backer Mission

Thanks for sharing your favorite BattleTech art over the last week. We were delighted to look through all the cool pieces you posted - especially that Ghost Bear tattoo!

For this week’s Bonus Backer Mission, we’ve got something any BattleTech fan can get behind - we want to know your favorite ‘Mech and why! Here’s Jordan, talking about two of his beloved children - the Hatchetman and the Mad Cat.

So how about you? Do you go in for the high-tech scouting ability of a jump-capable Raven (Mitch’s fav) or do you prefer to lay back and launch a pile of LRMs in a well-armored Catapult? Use the hashtags #FavBTMech #BATTLETECH and let us know!

Reminder: Live Stream Twitch Q&A this Friday!

Jordan, Mike, and Mitch love answering your questions about the game, talking shop, and sharing their thoughts on game development. These live streams are a lot of fun - and if you’re not careful, you just might learn something!

Another Victory for the Global Battletech Community - Stage 3 Expanded Mercenary Campaign Unlocked!
over 8 years ago – Fri, Oct 23, 2015 at 08:05:06 PM

Once again MechWarriors, Harebrained Schemes High Command salutes you!

Today marks the next stage of our campaign to deliver an authentic turn-based BattleTech experience to the PC - the unlocking of our Stage 3 Extended Mercenary Campaign.

The STAGE 3 EXPANDED MERCENARY CAMPAIGN puts you in full control of your life as a mercenary.

  • The single-player story campaign is now open-ended - charter JumpShip transport for your mercenary outfit to travel to various hot-zones across the Periphery and Inner Sphere, and continue your career even after the game's main story arc is resolved.
  • You’ll be able to choose your contracts and alliances, with both the 5 Great Houses and other sub-factions within the Inner Sphere.
  • A procedural contract-generation system will ensure that you always have fresh contracts available, wherever your Mercenary career may take you.
  • The missions you choose to accept and the objectives competed in those missions will determine your reputation as a mercenary, affecting the contracts and contract terms you may be offered in the future.

Funding Goals Update

Now, MechWarriors, it’s ONWARD towards our next major objective: STAGE 4 - PVP Multiplayer!

HBS Command has identified two high-value targets on our march to STAGE 4.

  • $2,000,000 - Customizable Home Base: As part of the ongoing campaign, you'll acquire a home base (likely in the form of a derelict DropShip) for your mercenary outfit to call home. At this funding level we'll also allow you to adjust its appearance, repair and upgrade its functionality, and grow and evolve your base as your outfit grows and evolves.

Again, congratulations on this great victory. The Global BattleTech Community has once again come together to change the course of BattleTech history! We thank you.

Friday’s AMA with Mike

If you were unable to take part in Mike McCain’s reddit Ask Me Anything yesterday, never fear. The power of the Internet allows us to share this link with you so you can see all of the questions and Mike’s responses.
